A pedestrian is in a critical condition with serious head injuries after being struck by a car.

The 39-year-old had been crossing the road at Monktonhall Terrace in Musselburgh, East Lothian, when he was hit by a Volkswagen Golf on Thursday at 6.50pm.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before being transferred to the Western General Hospital in the city.

The road was closed for three hours while road policing officers carried out inquiries. Witnesses are being urged to come forward.

Sergeant Gary Taylor said: "As part of our inquiries we are eager to speak with any other motorists or pedestrians who were on Monktonhall Road at 6.50pm on Thursday and who witnessed this collision.

"I would ask that anyone who believes they have information relevant to this incident to contact police immediately."
