A woman has died and two others have been injured in a crash in the Borders.

The incident took place on the St Boswells to Jedburgh stretch of the A68 at around 8pm on Wednesday night.

An 18-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when her Hyundai Getz was involved in a collision with a Suzuki Ignis.

She was taken to the Borders General Hospital in Melrose, where she later died.

The 71-year-old female driver of the Ignis is in a serious condition at the hospital.

A 78-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Ignis, is being treated for a chest injury.

Police closed the road for around ten hours and are urging any witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Neil Inglis from the divisional road policing unit at Galashiels said: "Tragically this collision has resulted in the death of a young woman and the driver of the other vehicle remains in a very serious condition in hospital.

"We are continuing with our investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision and would urge any motorists who were on the A68 at around 8 pm on Wednesday to contact us immediately."

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101.
