A baby boy was left permanently brain damaged after a man shook him violently.

Damien Menzies was found guilty of attempting to murder the 26-day-old infant at the High Court in Livingston on Friday.

The 25-year-old attacked the child at Deans Community High School in Livingston in October 2014.

The boy suffered a serious brain injury which has had a lasting impact on his health.

Detective constable Iain Holmes said: "Menzies perpetrated a violent attack on a baby in his care, causing permanent damage to this child's health.

"He has refused to take responsibility for his actions ever since, and we welcome today's conviction. The investigation and trial have been incredibly difficult for the child's family.

"I want to take this opportunity to commend them for showing the utmost bravery throughout. Although nothing can undo Menzies' actions, I hope this result can help them to move forward."

Menzies is due to be sentenced at Edinburgh High Court next month.
