A husband charged with murdering his wife was violent to previous partners, a court has heard.

Erhan Havaleoglu is on trial at the High Court in Paisley accused of killing Leighanne Cameron by strangling her and striking her on the head and body with a knife.

Ms Cameron, 29, was found dead in a house in Mid Calder, West Lothian, on October 28, 2015.

Havaleoglu's former girlfriend Shona McLean, 38, told the court on Tuesday he "smacked" her across the face on one occasion in 2008.

He is accused of assaulting Ms McLean, including an allegation he attempted to murder her by holding her head under water until she lost consciousness.

The 36-year-old also faces charges of assaulting ex-wife Lisa Clark between October 2007 and June 2009.

Ms McLean said her relationship with Havaleoglu started in 2008 and it was "ok" to begin with but he then started going through her phone to check her text messages.

She told the court Havaleoglu "smacked me across the face" in an argument over a phone call.

Ms McLean said the relationship continued for around a month but she ended it when he appeared in her bathroom one night after she finished work, while she was in the bath washing her hair.

She claimed he sat on the toilet and asked where she had been and said he had waited outside her work for her. The court heard she asked him to go and leave his key behind, which he did.

Ms McLean said she was content he had left the house and was asked what happened then.

She responded: "I just proceeded to wash my hair and I was leaning back to wash my hair and the next minute I knew I was under the water."

The jury heard she felt a hand on her neck or chest and that she was being pushed under for what "felt like a lifetime" and blacked out.

She added: "I remember coming to and I was a bit panicked, as I went to sit myself back up again I was pushed back under."

Ms McLean told the jury when she got up again she drove to her sister's house.

She told the court she phoned her sister and said "I'm on my way over, if I'm not there in 20 minutes call the police because he's killed me".

In her evidence, Havaleoglu's ex-wife Ms Clark said he attacked her in October 2007 when she confronted him about having an affair.

The jury heard she suggested she phone the woman she believed was involved but Havaleoglu said she was at home with her husband.

Ms Clark added: "As I had went to get the phone to phone her, he grabbed me by the neck and pinned me against the door to stop me getting to the phone."

She said in her eyes the marriage was over because of the affair but Havaleoglu thought it was over because they had financial troubles.

Havaleoglu denies all the charges and has lodged special defences of self-defence and incrimination for the murder charge and a special-defence of alibi to one of the assault charges.
