A man was knocked unconscious by a robber who stole his wallet and mobile phone on a secluded cycle path.

The 24-year-old was walking to work on a footpath off Whitecraig Road, opposite the Mercat restaurant in Whitecraig, East Lothian, when the suspect approached him.

The man started speaking to him and led him under an arch into a hidden area of the path, before punching him on the head, knocking him unconscious.

The victim woke up to find that his wallet and mobile phone had been stolen.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious around the time of the incident on Sunday at around 3pm.

The attacker is described as white with a large build and dark hair.

He was wearing a cream jacket and spoke with an Irish accent.

Detective constable William Dickson said: "Our inquiries into this matter are ongoing and I urge anyone who was in the area of Whitecraig Road between 3pm and 5pm on Sunday to contact police.

"The victim required treatment for a minor injury and was left badly shaken."
