The Pokemon Go game may have lured young vandals to a West Lothian graveyard.

A total of 28 headstones were pushed over at Whitburn Cemetery over the weekend in a spree which caused around £8000 of damage.

Several residents have since contacted West Lothian Council to raise concerns that the site was a so-called Pokestop in the popular Pokemon Go mobile app.

Dozens of youngsters have been stopping off at the site to "collect" items in the virtual reality game, it is claimed.

Although it is not known if the vandals were playing the game, the local authority has contacted Pokemon Go developers to request the cemetery is removed from the app.

Police are following a positive line of inquiry over the incident and anyone with information is urged to get in touch.

Executive councillor for services to the community, George Paul, said: "I am upset and angry that anyone would do this and I would urge anyone with information to contact the police.

"Graveyards are places where friends and family members go to remember their loved ones and many people will be very saddened to hear about this vandalism.

"Council officers have been at the graveyard to ensure that the site is safe and are trying to contact the owners of the liars."

The council has asked members of the public, friends or relatives not to touch any of the damaged headstones.

Anyone who would like advice about getting the gravestones repaired should contact George Downey on 01506 280 000.
