An investigation has been launched after a fire engine ended up on its side during a false alarm call-out.

The crash happened on Edinburgh Road near the train station in Bathgate, West Lothian, on Wednesday afternoon.

No one was seriously injured but the road was temporarily closed to allow a fuel spillage to be cleaned up.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "At 12.24pm on Wednesday a fire appliance left the road on Edinburgh Road, Bathgate, on its way to an automated fire alarm call.

"Fire service members were able to exit the vehicle without serious injury. They were checked at the scene by ambulance staff as a precaution. The road was closed afterwards because of a fuel spillage."

Fire service officers are working closely with police to investigate the incident, the spokeswoman added.
