An 11-year-old boy has been charged after almost 30 gravestones were pushed over at a West Lothian cemetery.

The incident on Sunday, which caused around £8000 of damage, sparked fears vandals had been lured to Whitburn Cemetery while playing the popular Pokemon Go game.

West Lothian Council has since asked the developers of the virtual reality game to remove the site from the app.

Police confirmed on Friday that an 11-year-old boy had been traced in connection with vandalism at the Manse Road graveyard.

The boy will now be reported to the Children's Reporter.

He was detained just days after five children aged 11 and 12 were charged over vandalism to more than 40 windows at Uphall Business Park in West Lothian.

Chief inspector Stevie Dolan, the area's police commander, said: "We recognise the impact this incident had on the community and to those with loved ones at rest within the cemetery and worked closely with our colleagues at West Lothian Council during our investigation.

"Offences of this nature will not be tolerated and whenever they occur we will work with all of our relevant partners to bring those responsible to account for their actions."

Executive councillor for services to the community, George Paul, said: "This is a sad incident and one that has caused a lot of distress to many people.

"Graveyards should be respected and cherished at all times and I hope this incident acts as a reminder that this type of unacceptable behaviour has consequences and it will not go unnoticed."
