CCTV images have been issued of a bogus workman who tried to force his way into an elderly man's house in Edinburgh.

The suspect went to the door of the home in Lauriston Place and told the resident that he was from the council and needed access.

The 70-year-old householder refused to let him in but the man then tried to force entry.

Officers want to hear from anyone who recognises the man captured in CCTV footage.

He is described as white, of medium build, aged between 22 and 27 years old and with short brown hair.

He was pictured walking towards Tollcross and was wearing blue jeans with a high visibility jacket.

Detective Constable Gavin Watson said: "If anyone recognises this individual, or has information that can assist with our ongoing investigation or who may have concerns about possible fraudulent workmen, then I urge them to please contact police immediately."

The incident, which is one of a string of bogus workman cases in the city this year, happened on Wednesday, May 10 at around 8.30pm.

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively a report can be submitted anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
