A man suffered serious injuries after being attacked by two men in Edinburgh city centre.

The 32-year-old victim was assaulted on Waterloo Place, near Princes Street, at around 12.40pm on Wednesday.

Onlookers claimed that two masked men got out of a car and hit the man on his head and body near a bus stop beside the Princes Street Suites apartments.

The attackers then fled in a white car towards Regent Road.

Police said the victim suffered a "number of serious wounds" and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

A large pool of blood could be seen on the pavement following the incident.

Waterloo Place was cordoned off for several hours and reopened shortly before 5pm.

Detective Sergeant Neil Spowart from Gayfield CID said: "This part of the city centre, just past the east end of Princes Street, was very busy at lunchtime with shoppers and visitors, and I want to speak to anyone who was in the area and may have seen the assault or the two men beforehand or afterwards."
