A man robbed an Edinburgh bookmakers after missing his train back to England.

Craig Parkes was staying in the capital but missed his train to Manchester due to a Scottish bank holiday on January 2.

Parkes, who had run out of money, then took part in a raid on Ladbrokes branch in the city's Granton area with an accomplice.

At the High Court in Edinburgh on Friday, he admitted repeatedly kicking the door of the West Granton Road shop and demanding money from an employee before making off with £295.

Parkes' counsel, Shelagh McCall QC, said: "He was intending to travel back on January 2 by himself by train.

"He did not appreciate that it is a public holiday in Scotland.

"The train timetable was different. He didn't catch the train as planned. He had run out of money."

The court heard that the robbery was captured on CCTV footage and the film was shown to the judge, Lady Rae.

Parkes' face was partially concealed during the raid, but could be clearly seen as he left the bookmakers.

Advocate depute Graeme Jessop said police suspected the perpetrators might be from Manchester and officers from England who viewed the CCTV positively identified Parkes as being the taller of the robbers.

Lady Rae jailed Parkes for three and a half years, having reduced the sentence from by six months due to his guilty plea.
