Fife motorists will be charged for Sunday parking from the start of the new year.

Councillors approved the plans on Tuesday as Fife Council tries to claw back £40m in savings.

Charges at metered on-street and off-street parking spaces will be introduced on Sundays after 1pm early in 2017.

Fife Council deputy leader Lesley Laird said: "Demand for parking within our town centres on Sundays is generally like any other day of the week and we need to find ways to manage the demand.

"With the ongoing significant budget challenges facing all local authorities, potentially up to £40m of cuts this year for Fife, we are one of the few councils that hadn't already introduced parking charges on Sundays and as a council we signed up for this when we approved our budget decisions back in February."

Ms Laird said private car park operators in Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy already charge all day on Sundays.

She said "different solutions" may be required in different towns and options could be explored by local committees.
