Detectives probing a hate crime at Edinburgh Central Mosque have issued a fresh appeal a week on from the incident.

A flaming object was thrown at the Potterrow building in the early hours of Sunday.

The item hit the mosque, damaging the front door and a bush in its garden.

Officers are keen to trace three women and a man who were in nearby George Square at around 2am, shortly before the incident.

The group, who are believed to have an Asian appearance, are understood to have been involved in an argument with the suspect.

He is described as a white man in his late 20s, around 5ft 10in in height, with a medium build and a shaved head. He was wearing a dark checked shirt and black t-shirt with white writing underneath.

The incident has shocked local residents, with a crowd turning out at the mosque on Tuesday to show solidarity for the Muslim community.

Detective inspector Grant Johnston said: "We are eager to trace the man and three women who were seen to have an verbal altercation with the suspect as we believe they may be key witnesses who can further our inquiries.

"We are still following a positive line of inquiry, nevertheless we are still keen to speak to members of the public who have information or were in the area at the time.

"Anyone who believes they have information that can assist our investigation is asked to get in touch."
