Four large cylinders of laughing gas have been stolen from a Fife hospital's dental department.

The nitrous oxide tanks were taken some time during the night between Wednesday and Thursday at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.

Police said thieves forced entry into the hospital's dental unit and stole four cylinders of the gas, commonly used as a sedative during dental treatment.

Officers believe those responsible used a vehicle to move the heavy cylinders off the hospital grounds.

Constable Sean Frew from Kirkcaldy Police Station said: "At this time we do not know if the cylinders have been stolen for resale purposes or for whoever took them to abuse the nitrous oxide within them.

"However, the cylinders themselves are quite cumbersome and heavy to move, meaning a vehicle was likely used during their theft.

"With that in mind, anyone who remembers seeing a suspicious vehicle around the hospital on either Wednesday evening or the early hours of Thursday morning should contact police immediately.

"In addition, anyone with any further information relevant to this investigation should also get in touch."

Laughing gas, also known as hippy crack, has become a popular recreational drug in recent years.

In May, it became illegal to import or sell nitrous oxide for human consumption under the psychoactive substances act.
