Detectives investigating a report of a rape near Princes Street have concluded that no crime was committed.

Officers launched an inquiry after a woman reported that she had been raped near a bus stop on Lothian Road in Edinburgh.

The incident was said to have happened in the early hours of Tuesday.

Detective chief inspector Alwyn Bell said: "Officers have carried out extensive enquiries and we are satisfied that no offence has occurred. I would like to thank the public for their assistance this week.

"I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence to come forward and speak to police.

"Dedicated officers will investigate all reports thoroughly and sensitively, with specialist support a priority."
