A new £12m main stand at Heart of Midlothian's Tynecastle Stadium has been approved by Edinburgh City Council.

The club's existing main stand will be partially demolished to make way for the major upgrade, which will also include a new nursery and play area.

The offices and ticket shop of the Scottish Premiership club will also be knocked down in the redevelopment, which will boost overall capacity to more than 20,000.

Members of the city council's development management subcommittee approved the proposals on Wednesday morning following a presentation from Hearts owner Ann Budge.

The new stand, which will be accessed from McLeod Street, will have 7290 seats and will also accommodate offices, hospitality lounges, a roof terrace and directors' suite, changing facilities and ticket kiosks.

The development will bring the total stadium capacity from 17,529 to 20,099.

Ms Budge told the committee the project would allow the club to host additional games, although these were likely to be in the "single figures".

The committee heard it would be unlikely the club would host other events such as music concerts, to avoid damaging the pitch and causing noise pollution for residents of neighbouring tenements.
