Three people are expected to appear in court on drugs charges after the death of a teenage girl following a house party.

Shellie Callaghan, 16, took ill at the house in Newtongrange, Midlothian, in the early hours of Saturday.

She died after being taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, with police later issuing a drugs warning over "ecstasy-type tablets".

On Monday, Police Scotland said a 42-year-old woman and two girls aged 16 and 17 had been charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The arrests came after searches of properties in the Midlothian towns of Newtongrange, Gorebridge and Easthouses on Monday.

The woman and two girls are expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

Community inspector Michelle Ritchie said: "We are continuing our enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of 16-year-old Shellie Callaghan at the weekend.

"Whether she had access to ecstasy-type tablets remains a line of inquiry we are following, and we continue to urge anyone who has taken such tablets to seek medical attention.

"I would appeal to anyone with such information to contact police on 101."
