A driver was injured while in her car with her two young children as an object hurled from a flyover smashed through her windscreen.

The mother was travelling westbound on Edinburgh City Bypass at Lanark Road near Juniper Green at 10am on Tuesday when the object broke through the front panel of her Volkswagen Up.

She stopped the car and contacted the police before attending Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where she was treated for a facial injury. She was released a short time later.

Minutes before the incident, another driver was forced to pull over as a stone thrown from the same bridge smashed through his windscreen.

Constable Denise Humphrey said: "This was an extremely reckless and dangerous act that could have had even more serious consequences.

"Understandably, everyone involved in both of these incidents were left badly shaken and it's thanks to the quick reactions of the drivers that they managed to safely pull over and contact police.

"Today I'm urging anyone who may have information on the person or persons responsible to come forward immediately."
