Police have released a CCTV image of a woman after a barmaid was subjected to homophobic abuse in Edinburgh.

The incident took place in Sofi's Bar in Henderson Street around 6pm on March 4.

Officers say the comments were "completely unacceptable" and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

The woman pictured in the CCTV image is of interest to the investigation and police are seeking the public's help in identifying her.

She is described as white, in her mid-thirties, around 5ft 7in tall with a heavy build and had shoulder-length hair which was dark at the roots and lighter at the ends.

At the time of the incident, she was wearing glasses, blue jeans and a long grey coat.

Police are treating the incident as a hate crime. Constable Shona MacKay from Leith police station said: "The comments directed towards the member of bar staff were completely unacceptable and we continue to progress this inquiry to trace the suspect.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who recognises the woman pictured in the CCTV footage and would ask the public to come forward if they can help us identify and trace this individual.

"In addition, anyone with any further information relevant to this investigation should also contact police immediately."

Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
