A woman who claims she was raped by a former Scotland footballer had no memory of the alleged incident, a witness has told a court.

Detective sergeant Rebecca Gregson said officers carried out a "cognitive interview" with the 30-year-old, who is suing David Goodwillie and his ex-Dundee United teammate David Robertson for damages.

She claims she woke up naked in a flat in Armadale, West Lothian, with no recollection of what had happened since being in the pub the previous evening.

A civil hearing at the Court of Session in Edinburgh heard on Tuesday that detectives tried to help her retrieve her memories.

Officers used a technique in which the interviewee was asked to relive the alleged incident.

The woman agreed there was a gap in her memory in terms of what had happened to her.

Her solicitor Simon Di Rollo asked her if the memory was recovered and she said: "No."

Ms Gregson corroborated the alleged victim's earlier claims she did not know who Goodwillie was when officers told her they had found his DNA on a swab taken from her.

The officer said the woman was "still unaware" of his identity, adding: "[She] was quite adamant that how his DNA was there was confusing. She couldn't understand."

Mr Di Rollo said: "In her evidence to us she said at one point 'I have never met David Goodwillie'. Is that consistent with what she was saying to you when you were informing her of this?"

The detective replied: "Yes."

The court was told Mr Goodwillie was taken in for questioning but gave a no comment interview.

Mr Robertson had also initially given a no comment interview but later gave a statement to detectives, telling them that he had had sexual intercourse with the woman.

Ms Gregson agreed that up until that point there was no evidence of that taking place.

Lord Armstrong also heard evidence from Anne Marie McKay, who said she had gone to the Glenmavis Tavern in Bathgate on January 1, 2011.

She said she had not seen the woman in the bar before but knew her through work. She said she was at the bar when the woman fell over into her side, and later saw her making her way to the public bar.

Ms McKay, 47, said the woman was "quite drunk" adding: "Her eyes were quite glazed over and her words weren't like making sense."

She later saw her again outside the pub.

She said: "She was kind of staggering about and she only had one shoe on.

"I called over to her was she OK and where was her shoe. She said that's what she was doing - trying to find her shoe."

The alleged victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is suing Goodwillie and Robertson after raising a £500,000 damages claim at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

In the case she alleges both men raped her in the early hours of January 2, 2011, at the flat in Armadale.

The woman claimed she was incapable to consent because she had drank alcohol.

She maintains she was "visibly and obviously severely intoxicated" when she left and was offered a lift home in a taxi hailed by the footballers.

The woman says they asked the driver to drop all three of them at a flat in nearby Armadale where she claims she was raped.

Former Dundee United, Blackburn Rovers and Aberdeen player Goodwillie, who is now with Plymouth Argyle, and Robertson, of Bathgate, deny the allegation and maintain that intercourse was consensual.

Both men say they had sex with the woman but deny she was incapable.

The Crown dropped criminal charges against Goodwillie in July 2011 before the case went to trial, while no charges were ever brought against Robertson.

The hearing before Lord Armstrong continues.
