A woman has denied supplying drugs after a teenager died following a house party in Midlothian.

Shellie Callaghan, 16, took ill at the party in Newtongrange in October last year.

She died in hospital hours later and police said they believed she may have taken ecstasy.

Claire Paton appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday in connection with the teenager's death.

The 44-year-old denied seven charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act and one under the Children and Young Persons Scotland Act.

Charges included being concerned in the supply of ecstasy and acting in a manner which caused a child unnecessary suffering or injury.

Paton, from Newtongrange, did not appear in the dock. Her solicitor Keith Leishman entered not guilty pleas on her behalf.

Two girls, aged 16 and 17, also face drugs charges in connection with Shellie's death.

The pair, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are said to have been concerned in the supply of ecstasy to Shellie in October last year.

A trial date was set for August 15 with an intermediate diet due on July 18.
