Hearts and Hibs legends among Royal Mail's dream team collection

Royal Mail has produced a stamp collection of the UK's dream team to mark 150 years of Association Football.

Dream team: Dave Mackay and George Best represent Edinburgh connections in the Royal Mail collection.

For years they set the stands of Easter Road and Tynecastle alight and now the impact of two of Hibs and Hearts' greatest players are to be celebrated in a new collection of stamps.

In recognition of the 150th anniversary since the rules of Association Football were established, Royal Mail has released a collection of stamps featuring some of the UK’s best-loved footballers.

Among the dream team are Edinburgh-born Hearts and Tottenham midfielder Dave Mackay and Hibernian legend - and arguably one of the world's greatest ever players – George Best.

Artist Andrew Kinsman created the impressive line-up from existing photographs of the players and Royal Mail has created a unique postmark in the birthplace of each player featured.

Alex Horne, general secretary of the FA, said: “The Royal Mail has done a fantastic job with producing this stunning collection of stamps, and the artwork by Andrew Kinsman is particularly striking. I am sure it will serve as a permanent reminder of The FA’s 150th year and stand as a lasting tribute to the great players featured.”

Dave Mackay began his professional playing career at the club he grew to love as a boy, Heart of Midlothian.

In the 1957-58 season, he was captain of the side when they broke the British league goalscoring record.

In March 1959, Mackay made the move south when he signed for Tottenham Hotspur and stayed there for almost a decade.

His move into management saw him taking the reins at Nottingham Forest, Derby and Birmingham City before he retired from football in 1997.

Needing little introduction, Manchester United legend George Best stunned the football world when he signed to play for Hibs in 1979.

And while he was unable to save the club from relegation, Best proved a hit with the fans, with supporters flooding to the turnstiles to see the Northern Irish man in action.

Joining Mackay and Best in the line-up were Denis Law, John Barnes, Gordon Banks, John Charles, Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves, Kevin Keegan, Bobby Moore and Bryan Robson.

Andrew Hammond, managing director for stamps and collectibles at Royal Mail, said: “Across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, we’ve been lucky enough to witness some of the finest footballers to ever play the beautiful game.
