EastEnders actress Barbara Windsor and Cold Feet actor James Nesbitt are among some of the people to receive honours at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

Windsor, 78, best known for her role as Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap, will become a dame for her services to charity and entertainment.

The Carry On! star is an ambassador for Age UK and backs other charities supporting the elderly, as well launching the British Legion's Poppy Appeal in October.

Following the announcement she was to become a dame in the New Year's Honours List, Windsor said: "For a girl from the East End born into a working class family and an evacuee during World War Two, this is truly like a dream. I am so happy and blessed to say it's real."

The Hobbit actor, James Nesbitt, will be awarded an Order of the British Empire for his services to drama and to the community in Northern Ireland - after spending years helping families affected by the Troubles.

He said: "I've been very blessed with my work and very blessed to come from Northern Ireland and for those two things to be on the citation was really rather gratifying."

Others to be honoured at the ceremony include Collette Kallee, who will receive an OBE for her services to the Ebola response in Sierra Leone, and Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council chief executive, Steven Pleasant, who will pick up an MBE for his services to the welfare and housing of asylum seekers and refugees.
