A 1980s-inspired music concert being held at football ground has been cancelled after only 700 tickets were sold in advance of the event.

Concert at Queens was announced by Dumfries side Queen of the South and was scheduled to take place on Saturday June 4.

Big names including the Boomtown Rats and Rick Astley were lined-up to play Palmerston Park in a similar event to a concert last year which attracted around 5000 revellers.

Despite the previous success the Scottish Championship side were left with the "difficult decision" to scrap this year's concert.

A statement on the club's website read: "We are extremely disappointed to have to announce the cancellation of the Concert at Queens, which was due to take place on Saturday June 4.

"This was a difficult decision to make as we know many people were looking forward to it.

"However, it has become apparent with three weeks to go that advance ticket sales of around 700, which were much lower than the 5000 sold last year, were not sufficient to justify the event going ahead on a commercial basis."

Other bands who were due to play the event included ABC, The Stars From The Commitments, The Rezillos, and The Dangleberries.

The tickets, costing £45, also gave access to a "catering village" and "traditional funfair".

As well as stating those who had purchased tickets would be refunded, Queens also blamed low ticket uptake on other festivals taking place around the same area and time.

The statement added: "We have not been helped with the number of alternative outdoor festivals and concerts across Scotland and the North of England.

"After weighing up additional costs to go ahead with the concert from this point against the costs of cancelling altogether it was unfortunately a decision that had to be taken.

"Clearly all customers who have already bought and paid for tickets for the event will be refunded in full. Cheques will be issued over the next week."
