Following her death at the age of 52 from cancer, we take a look back at Caroline Aherne's career in pictures.

Aherne starred as the elderly Mrs Merton in the mock talk show which she was also one of the writers of.

The show ran from 1995 to 1998, and in 2006 poll was voted to have had the second best comic-one liner when Mrs Merton infamously asked Debbie McGee: "So, what first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?"

Between 1994 and 1997 Caroline Aherne wrote for and performed in the BBC comedy series, The Fast Show.

One of Aherne's most memorable characters was meteorologist Poula Fisch, who announced temperatures of 45C everywhere, accompanied by the exclamation of "Scorchio!"

Aherne also played the Checkout Girl in the show.

Aherne played the lethargic Denise in The Royal Family, a hit BBC comedy which ran for three series between 1998 and 2000.

The Mrs Merton Christmas Show won the best talk show Bafta in 1997 while The Royle Family took home the best sitcom award in 2000 and 2007.

Aherne was nominated for Baftas for her performance in both shows, as well as her directing of The Royle Family in 2001.

More recently Caroline Aherne was the narrator of Channel 4 hit Gogglebox.
