There was an Ewok on the Royal Mile on Saturday who was finding life a little tough.

It's the middle of the Edinburgh Festival so space is at a premium when you're entertaining the masses.

Nevertheless, the little Star Wars character seemed to be a far distant moon in the orbit of planet luck.

Each act has only a limited amount of time to attract attention to themselves and this teddy bear creature suddenly found himself up against stiff competition.

On the opposite side of the street was Darth Vader, a Stormtrooper, a fire breather and a levitating Yoda.

Worse, one foot away from his fur was a much louder doomsday preacher vying for an audience.

The muffled cries of 'Allay loo ta nuv!' (Ewokese for 'Celebrate the love') faded in the onslaught of the much louder declaration that the end is in fact night and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

After a 15 minute vocal battle the rather dejected looking Ewok gave up and settled for shyly waving his paws at anyone who glanced his way instead.

Daily life during the largest arts festival in the world is a merry skirmish for everyone brave enough to battle the city's streets.

Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste.

From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.

Last year there were 50,459 performances of 3,314 shows in 313 venues - figures which go some way in explaining what one little Ewok can truly be up against.

As the festival gears up for its final week of shows marked by one cracker of a big send off at the end, we take a look at life on the streets for Edinburgh's guest performers.
