Grammy-Award winning pop star Lady Gaga has been confirmed as the act to headline the half-time show at the 2017 Super Bowl.

The singer ended speculation over who would perform the coveted slot by saying "the rumors are true" to her 63 million Twitter followers on Friday morning.

She said: "It's not an illusion.. This year the Super Bowl goes GAGA!"

Super Bowl LI is being held in Houston, Texas, on February 5.

The National Football League said it will be the second time the singer will appear on the Super Bowl stage, as she opened last February's match with a performance of the national anthem.

Last year's half-time show featured Beyonce, Coldplay and Bruno Mars, who performed a medley of some of their greatest hits.

Other past performers include Michael Jackson, Madonna and The Black Eyed Peas.

The Super Bowl is the most-watched event on US television, which regularly draws an audience of 100 million viewers. It is also the most expensive TV programme for advertisers who pay millions to secure 30-second commercial slots.
