Former Eggheads panellist CD de Mooi will not face extradition to the Netherlands to face murder allegations after his European arrest warrant was thrown out.

Dutch police launched an investigation after the BBC quiz show star claimed in his autobiography he may have killed a knife-wielding mugger while living rough as a rent boy in Amsterdam in the late 1980s.

De Mooi, whose real name is Joseph Connagh, was sensationally arrested at Terminal 3 at Heathrow Airport last month as he arrived in the UK after Dutch officials issued the Europe-wide warrant.

De Mooi had described the apparent killing in a passage recounting his years in the Dutch city.

The 46-year-old former model was wanted in Holland for questioning over accusations of manslaughter, murder, assault and assault by battery.

The case for his extradition to the Netherlands was dismissed at Westminster Magistrates Court.

Judge Khalid Quershi described the case as "dodgy" due to the lack of a domestic warrant from Dutch authorities who had made no decision to charge him - both of which are needed to meet the criteria for extradition under UK Law.

Judge Quershi ordered the £5,000 security for bail be returned to the TV star but added there was nothing to prevent the Dutch authorities from reissuing the arrest warrant.

De Mooi was suspended from the BBC in January after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 23-year-old man during a night out in Glasgow. He left the corporation on the same day he learned he would face no further charges with the claims dropped.

De Mooi announced in May he was moving to South Africa to pursue an acting career.
