A man in his 60s has died in hospital after plunging off a cliff on a quad bike.

The incident happened at Daill near Durness in Sutherland on Thursday afternoon.

The man was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital by Shetland Coastguard, where he succumbed to his injuries. His identify has not been confirmed.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Emergency services were altered to an incident at Daill near Durness in north west Sutherland yesterday afternoon.

"A man in his 60s had sustained injuries after a fall from a cliff. The alarm was raised by a member of the public who spotted the man.

"A coastguard helicopter from Shetland attended the scene and transferred the man to Raigmore Hospital, where sadly he succumbed to his injuries.

"There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and as with all sudden deaths a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal. The man's identity will not be confirmed until next of kin are fully aware.
