A policeman who helped deliver a baby boy by the roadside attended a crash nine years later where the same boy was critically injured, it has emerged.

Sergeant Peter Allan is now backing a fundraising campaign to help Dylan Davidson recover from his injuries.

A mass pipe and drums festival will take place on Saturday in Dylan's home town of Dornoch in the Highlands, with the funds raised going towards Dylan's rehabilitation.

Sgt Allan was flagged down by Dylan's parents Jean and Kevin Davidson as they drove to Caithness General Hospital in 2006.

Jean was in labour and was not going to make it to the hospital, so Kevin and Sgt Allan overcame last minute complications and delivered the healthy baby boy.

But in November last year, Sgt Allan was called to a one-vehicle accident in Dornoch. Dylan, now nine, had been knocked down as he walked from school.

The schoolboy was left critically injured and is still receiving treatment. Sgt Allan said he hoped for a good turnout at Saturday's fundraising event.

He said: "'This event has kindly been organised by Mr Duncan Macdonald, Drum Major with Beauly Firth and Glens Pipe Band.

"Duncan has been playing in various bands for over 37 years and is also a camera operator for the Northern Camera Safety Partnership.

"Following discussions between Duncan and myself in relation to safety speed checks being completed near schools following Dylans accident, Duncan kindly offered to organise this event.

"I hope that it will be well supported and will further help Dylan and his family with his rehabilitation."

In a statement released through the police, Dylan's parents added: "We are extremely grateful for the assistance that was given by Peter Allan and other officers in both these circumstances and to Mr Duncan Macdonald for arranging this event.

"Dylan has made a brave recovery from his accident.

"We are looking forward to the pipe band event that has been kindly put together by members of the community and want to thank everyone in advance for their contributions towards Dylan's treatment."

Around 200 musicians will take part in the event, which will take plaace at The Square in Dornoch at 7.45pm.
