A Commonwealth medallist injured in a motorbike accident in Vietnam is to be woken from her coma.

Inverness judo star Stephanie Inglis suffered serious head injuries when her skirt caught in the wheel of a motorcycle taxi and pulled her off on May 12.

The athlete, who won silver at the Glasgow games in 2014, was initially given a 1% chance of survival after the crash.

Her condition has improved but since then she has developed complications including pneumonia and septicaemia.

The 27-year-old was transferred to hospital in Thailand earlier this week, where doctors discovered two previously undetected spinal fractures.

They plan to begin waking Ms Inglis from a medically-induced coma over the next 48 hours, although it could take days or weeks for her to fully emerge.

More than 6700 people have helped raise nearly £250,000 to pay for her medical treatment.

Ms Inglis' Debenhams medical insurance was deemed invalid because of a clause in the fine print of her contract.

A spokesman for her family said: "Doctors believe that her head injury is beginning to heal and over the next 48 hours are significantly reducing her sedation in an attempt to wake Stephanie from her medically induced coma, so they have a better understanding of the extent of her injury.

"They have stressed that this can take days or weeks and not to expect instant results, but believe it is a vital next step."

They added: "Stephanie is still in a very critical condition but thanks to everyone who is supporting her we have given her the best chance of recovery."
