A pensioner has died after being found in the water near a dinghy off the Black Isle.

Peter Jones, 73, was pulled unresponsive from Fortrose Bay at around 9.20am on Monday.

Mr Jones was flown by helicopter to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, where it was confirmed that he had died.

A spokesman for Kessock RNLI, which pulled Mr Jones from the firth, said: "We were paged to launch following reports of a person in the water near Chanonry Point.

"The alarm was raised by a member of the public who saw the person in the water, next to a dinghy.

"As the lifeboat approached the campsite area at Fortrose they were guided in towards the casualty, who was near the shoreline.

"Near the shore, three of the crew left the lifeboat and entered the shallow water to make their way to the casualty, who was wearing a lifejacket, and took them ashore, where they immediately started emergency first aid.

"RNLI volunteers assisted the ambulance crew with further medical care before the casualty was transferred into a coastguard helicopter for onward transfer to Raigmore hospital in Inverness."
