A woman was sexually assaulted as she walked in a Highland town in the early hours of Tuesday.

The attack happened between 1am and 1.30am on Mill Street, Ullapool, near the town's High School.

Police have been conducting enquiries at the scene and with residents and visitors in the area and are appealing for anyone who may have information to make contact.

A spokesman said officers are keen to speak to a man in connection with the attack.

He is described as being white, around 5ft 10in, in his 30s, of average build with short dark hair. He was wearing a red outdoor jacket with white sleeves and dark jeans and spoke with a foreign accent.

Detective inspector Donald MacDonald said: "This is a particularly distressing assault and I am appealing for anyone who was in the Ullapool area on Monday evening or Tuesday morning and has information that could assist enquiries to come forward.

"Officers are continuing to carry out enquiries into this incident and I would like to reassure the public that we are using all available means to identify the person responsible."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
