A sunburnt dolphin rescued when a wildlife-loving couple were led astray by their satnav is recovering.

Lorraine Culloch and her partner Mike Robertson found four-year-old Spirtle after taking a wrong turn on their way to a popular dolphin-watching spot on the Cromarty Firth.

Spirtle had beached in Nigg Bay and suffered serious sunburn before she could be led back out to sea at high tide.

Nearly two months after the stranding in late May, Spirtle has been spotted again 150 miles from shore by a team from Aberdeen University.

Experts from the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme (SMASS) say it appears Spirtle is making a quick recovery.

They said: "The blistering caused by sunburn whilst out of the water has sloughed off so she has a pretty large skin defect on her right side.

"She seems to be behaving normally, however, breaching and chasing fish, so we're optimistic the wound isn't causing her too much of a problem and from the photos it appears to be healing quickly.

"Fingers crossed she continues to recover and, as she is part of the resident and well monitored population, we should be able to track her progress."
