A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle on the A9 near Dornoch in Sutherland.

The man was discovered by police just north of the Dornoch Bridge by the A949 junction at around 2.30am on Monday.

The A9 has been closed in both directions and motorists are advised to follow a 30-mile diversion.

A police spokesman said: "We can confirm a male pedestrian has sadly died following a collision with a vehicle at around 2.30am [on Monday] on the A9 at Evelix, Dornoch.

"The A9 is currently closed with diversions via the A949 at Clashmore, the A836 to Lairg and the A839 to the Mound.

"Police Scotland is appealing for any witnesses who may have seen any pedestrians walking on the carriageway prior to 2.30am to contact them on 101."
