A fallen climber has been airlifted off a mountain in "atrocious weather".

Rescuers braved a six-hour hike through the Fisherfield Mountains after being called out on Friday night, reaching the climber at 5am on Saturday.

They called in a helicopter, which navigated low cloud and heavy rain to winch the climber off the north west Highland mountain.

A spokesman for Dundonnell MRT said: "We were called out to assist a fallen climber and due to the seriousness of the incident we asked for assistance from Torridon MRT and helicopter support.

"Atrocious weather conditions meant the helicopter could not get close so a six-hour walk in with stretcher and kit ensued. The casualty was located and R948 assisted with some nice flying to evacuate the casualty to hospital."

A Torridon and Kinlochewe MRT spokesman added:"We left base just before 11pm and after a six hour walk the condition of the causality was assessed and an airlift off the mountain was requested.

"After negotiating low cloud, the helicopter made its way to the scene with some very impressive flying and managed to winch the casualty on board."

The helicopter later returned and carried both rescue teams off the mountain.
