Shopworkers have been urged to be on the lookout for counterfeit cash after a number of fake £50 notes were used in the Highlands.

The counterfeit notes were spent on low-cost items in Inverness and Nairn at various times in the past few days.

A police spokesman said they bear the brand mark of the First Trust Bank and the serial number AA294395.

All reported incidents so far have involved men of different descriptions but police believe the incidents may be linked.

Detective inspector Richard Baird said: "We are advising those members of the public who are dealing with cash sales to bear this in mind and check high value banknotes before giving change.

"Anyone who deliberately uses counterfeit currency is committing crime and we will investigate all instances reported to us."

Anyone who encounters a fake note is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
