Boulders weighing up to 40 tonnes have cascaded down a mountain in the Highlands.

The landslip occurred on the Steall Gorge footpath, near Ben Nevis, on Tuesday evening.

The Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team has warned hillwalkers to exercise caution in the area.

Experts from the John Muir Trust are expected to visit the site this week.

A spokesman said: "A huge landslide came down on Tuesday evening from Meall Cumhann, covering the Steall Gorge path. Debris reached all the way to the river, some of the rocks in excess of 40 tonnes."

Lochaber MRT said they were unable to properly asses the size of the landslip in the dark.

They added: "There are lots of unstable rocks and debris hanging above the path. Be careful if you venture this way."
