Divers are set to inspect a ferry which crashed as it tried to dock in the Western Isles.

The MV Hebrides was sailing into port in Lochmaddy on North Uist when it struck harbour pontoons and hit the seabed on Sunday.

The incident has disrupted ferry services on the Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy route and CalMac has organised an extra sailing from South Uist to Mallaig on Monday in response.

There will also be an additional return journey on the Berneray to Harris route.

Specialist divers arrived in Lochmaddy at the weekend and are due to begin their inspection on Monday.

The MV Hebrides, which had been carrying passengers from Tarbert on Harris, had 76 people on board, as well as 13 cars, one lorry and a motorhome.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened shortly after 11am.

CalMac operations director Drew Collier said: "We are doing everything possible to ease disruption for our customers and apologise for the undoubted inconvenience which is being experienced.

"We are grateful for the support, patience and understanding we have received from passengers and we ask that our customers continue to bear with us while we work to sort out the best alternatives possible.

"The safety of our passengers, crew and vessel is paramount and everyone can be assured that a full formal investigation is under way."
