A road has been blocked by protesters campaigning against the expansion of a waste water plant in the Highlands.

About 20 protesters temporarily shut the main road through Ardersier on Tuesday morning before being moved on by police.

They are unhappy about plans to expand an £11m waste plant near the town, which Scottish Water says is essential for 5000 new homes at Tornagrain.

Hollywood actress Helen Mirren joined more than 1000 people in signing a petition against the plan earlier this year.

Campaigners claim there was a lack of consultation over Scottish Water's plans and have raised concerns about its impact on traffic, tourism and the environment.

The protest on Tuesday coincided with a visit to the plant at Ardersier by Highland councillors.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "Essential improvements are required to waste water infrastructure in the Ardersier area. The purpose of these improvements is to meet the needs of future growth and development in the area and to protect the environment.

"We are awaiting today's Highland Council planning decision in relation to part of these improvements."
