Travel has been disrupted on roads and ferries as winds of up to 108mph batter Scotland.

The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for winds across the whole of the country on Thursday following stormy weather earlier in the week.

Gusts of up to 108mph were recorded in the Cairngorms in the early hours of the morning, while winds hit 66mph in Orkney and 45mph in Glasgow.

In total, 23 of CalMac's 26 ferry sailings have been cancelled or disrupted and travel on the Dornoch Bridge is restricted.

Blackouts hit about 500 homes and businesses in Muir of Ord, Insch, Kames, Orkney and Krieff in the early hours of Thursday morning.

STV weatherman Sean Batty said: "The worst of the winds will be happening in Caithness and north Aberdeenshire on Thursday morning but from about mid-morning the winds will ease off in most parts.

"It will stay quite windy in parts of Scotland until later in the day and when the strong winds move away to Scandinavia we could actually see some sleet on the tops of the mountain."
