A ferry which crashed into a harbour in the Western Isles is due to return to service.

A mechanical failure caused the MV Hebrides to collide with pontoons and hit the seabed as it sailed into port at Lochmaddy harbour in North Uist on September 25.

There were 76 people on board the CalMac ferry at the time, though no one was hurt.

The vessel suffered damage to its hull and starboard propeller shaft but the ferry operator has said it has successfully completed sea trials after a period of repairs in dry dock.

Normal services are expected to resume on Monday.

CalMac's general manager of operations, Ross Moran, said: "We are pleased to report that MV Hebrides left dry dock in Greenock this morning.

"She has since successfully completed sea trials and is now sailing north in preparation for relocation arrangements tomorrow and resuming service on the Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy route on Monday.

"Both MVs Clansman and Lord of the Isles will return to their usual routes in readiness for Monday.

"I would like to take this opportunity, once again, to thank all our customers and communities for their patience during this disruption."
