Climber killed and five students rescued in Cairngorms

One man has died and five fellow mountaineers saved after a rescue drama in the Cairngorms

One climber has died and five rescued after a group of student mountaineers went missing overnight in the Cairngorms.

The man was confirmed dead after five of his fellow group were located on Monday morning by rescue teams.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said the five were located on a hill near Carn Tarsuinn in the Cairngorms by Braemar Mountain Rescue Team at around 12:10pm on Monday.

Shortly afterwards the man's body was recovered in the Jacob's Ladder area of the Cairngorms.

The five walkers are safe and not injured and have been taken by helicopter to the Aviemore area. Police inquiries into the incident are continuing.

A major search operation involving 112 people from the police, RAF and mountain rescue teams was launched when the party of six men were reported overdue in the Cairngorms on Sunday afternoon.

They are all understood to be students in their 20s from the Leeds area.

Northern Constabulary said the group had made phone contact with Grampian Police on Monday morning.

The group had been climbing the northern corries of the mountain range with the intention of emerging at the ski area car park on Sunday afternoon. At around 3pm, one of the party fell and the alarm was raised.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team were mobilised and rescuers struggled through difficult weather conditions to reach the casualty.

An RAF spokesman said five of the men were picked up by rescue helicopter 137, but one remains unaccounted for. He said the five rescued hillwalkers are uninjured.

Northern Constabulary is coordinating the search which involves members of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team (MRT), Dundonnell MRT, RAF Leuchars MRT, RAF Lossiemouth MRT, Braemar MRT.

Assistance is also being provided from Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) MRT, RAF Leeming MRT, 5 SARDA dogs from Scotland, Five Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) Dogs from the Lake District and also five SARDA MRT members and Ogwen Valley MRT (Wales).
