The First Minister has revealed plans for a £20m redevelopment of Aberdeen International Airport.

The revamp is the largest since the airport opened nearly 40 years ago and will see its terminal grow by half.

Other improvements include bigger passenger and baggage areas, as well as new shops and restaurants.

Nicola Sturgeon, who announced the plans in Aberdeen on Monday, said: "This investment by Aberdeen International Airport and its owners shows great ambitions and confidence in the airport's future in preparing for projected growth.

"By increasing capacity and improving the passenger experience, the airport is making a clear statement."

Despite the number of passengers at Aberdeen Airport dropping by 7% in 2015, last year was still the airport's second busiest ever.

Airport managing director Carol Benzie said: "Not only does this investment represent the most significant upgrade to the airport since the current terminal first opened in 1977, it demonstrates our commitment to providing passengers with high quality facilities.

"Now more than ever, it is vital that we invest in our airport to help improve the region’s attractiveness as a key investment destination and that we provide passengers, airlines and the city with an airport they can all be proud of.”
