A fisherman lost at sea when he fell overboard from a boat near Orkney has been named.

Craig Reid, 25, from Inverness, was lost from the Apollo 20 miles north west of the islands on Monday.

A major search was launched, led by coastguard helicopters from Sumburgh and Stornoway and supported by military aircraft in the area to participate in Operation Joint Warrior.

An RNLI lifeboat crew was also involved despite rough seas and powerful gales.

The search was called off shortly before 4.30pm on Monday with the agreement of the Apollo's remaining crew.

Police Scotland detective inspector Scott MacDonald said: 'I would like to thank all those who have assisted in the search efforts so far. Sadly, Mr Reid has not been found.

"My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

The skipper of a fishing boat that sank off Mingulay in the Western Isles earlier this month also remains missing.

Chris Morrison, 27, and Martin Johnstone, 29, both died when the crab trawler Louisa went down south of Barra on April 9.

Paul Alliston, 42, remains missing, while Lachlan Armstrong, 27, survived by swimming to shore.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has launched separate inquiries into both incidents.
