A man and his dog were rescued by the RNLI after their yacht went adrift in the North Sea.

Anthony Train and Sniffy the dog were sailing between Peterhead and Orkney when the vessel's rudder failed 50 miles out on Monday night.

Mr Train, 60, alerted the coastguard and the Fraserburgh lifeboat was sent to tow the Francis Prowd back to port.

A spokesman for the RNLI said: "The volunteer crew members of the Fraserburgh lifeboat responded quickly when their pagers went off late on Monday night.

"The Fraserburgh lifeboat was launched just after 10.00pm on Monday and returned to port at 5.20am this morning with the disabled yacht in tow.

"Experienced yachtsman Anthony Train had been sailing with his sea-going canine companion between Peterhead and Orkney when his rudder had began to malfunction.

"With the steering gone and being around 50 miles out to sea Anthony wasted no time in contacting the coastguard."
