Home Office enforcement officers have arrested 11 restaurant workers during immigration raids in the Northern Isles.

They were detained after four premises were targeted in Mainland, Shetland.

Two men, a 23-year-old Bangladeshi accused of overstaying a student visa and a Nepalese man aged 31, were arrested at Raba Indian Restaurant on Commercial Street, Lerwick.

Officers also targeted Mr T's takeaway in Lerwick in the raids last Thursday, where two Nepalese men, aged 26 and 37, and a 37-year-old Pakistani man were arrested by immigration officials.

All five men have been detained pending removal from the UK, the Home Office said.

In Scalloway, officers arrested five Chinese nationals at the Hai Yang takeaway who were found to have entered the country illegally. They included four men, aged between 37 and 47, and a 42-year-old woman.

A 32-year-old Bangladeshi man working at the Taj Tandoori takeaway in Brae had overstayed a visit visa.

These workers have been ordered to report to a police station regularly while steps are taken to remove them.

Stephen Roarty, from immigration enforcement, said: "This is a clear warning to those in Scotland abusing our immigration laws that, wherever you are in the country, our dedicated and well-resourced teams will find you.

"The use of illegal labour is not victimless. It defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts genuine employers and denies legitimate job hunters work. We are happy to work with employers who want to play by the rules but those who flout them will face heavy financial penalties.

"I would urge anyone with detailed and specific information about suspected immigration abuse to get in touch."
