Firefighters were called out in Aberdeen to rescue a seagull which became trapped on the roof of a city-centre building.

Despite the best efforts of the fire crew and animal welfare officers, the bird had to be put down following the operation on St Nicholas Street on Wednesday.

The Scottish SPCA called the fire service at about 1.30pm after the seagull was found to be trapped in netting.

A height-vehicle and fire appliance attended the scene.

Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Michelle Graham said: "I was called to rescue a gull which had become caught in netting on top of a building in Aberdeen.

"Due to the height of the building I was unable to reach the bird, but the local fire and rescue service were happy to assist.

"Sadly, the gull had sustained severe injuries to its wing, therefore the kindest and only humane option was to end its suffering by putting it to sleep."
