A 32-year-old man has died after a crash involving a car and an articulated lorry.

The collision between the Iceland lorry and the Toyota Yaris took place on the B979 near Westhill, to the west of Aberdeen, at around 8.30am on Thursday.

The road was closed between the B9119 Cairnie road and the A944 route to Elrick for several hours while road collision investigators carried out inquiries.

The family of the victim, who was from Torphins in Aberdeenshire, has been informed.

The lorry driver was in shock but was not injured.

Road Policing Sergeant Rob Warnock said: "My thoughts, and that of my officers, are very much with the family and friends of the man who sadly died in this dreadful collision.

"Several people witnessed this incident and I am acutely aware that they, and others who assisted at the scene, have also been affected by the tragic circumstances.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the crash or who may have seen either vehicle shortly beforehand and who hasn't yet spoken with Police to do so as a matter of urgency to help us piece together exactly what happened."

Anyone with information who hasn't yet come forward should contact Police Scotland via 101.
