Passengers at Aberdeen Airport are continuing to face delays after emergency repairs were carried out on its runway.

Damaged tarmac at the southern end of the airstrip was repaired on Wednesday night, but thick fog and cloudy weather were causing further disruption on Thursday.

It was the second time emergency work has been carried out on the runway this year.

A spokeswoman for Aberdeen Airport said: "Weather conditions are significantly improving and flights are beginning to arrive at the airport.

"Due to the earlier disruption, however, some flights are still experiencing delays."

The airport's runway was partially closed at around 5pm on Wednesday after the damage was discovered.

The runway was shortened to allow outbound flights to take off while engineers carried out repairs but work was hampered by heavy rain and fog.

A spokesman for the airport confirmed shortly before midnight on Wednesday that the issue had been resolved.

He said: "The damage to the tarmac at the southern end of the runway has now been repaired and the runway is now fully open for normal operations.

"Disrupted passengers are advised to contact their airline for details on rescheduled flights. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused."

In January, the runway had to be shortened after a huge hole appeared in the tarmac in the wake of Storm Frank. Planes had to be diverted while emergency repairs were carried out.
